For fellow Walking Dead fans, this song was on the last episode and I’m sure it struck many of you as being….awesome! For those non-Walking Dead fans: enjoy!
Pretty awesome, eh?
Speaking of “eh,” I heard this song by Of Montreal on Morning Becomes Eclectic and thought it was a fun song to share.
Those that know me well know that my pop culture knowledge is poor. I blame this on living in Guatemala for some formative years, and growing up with a mom that listened mostly to music in Spanish, and watched Spanish news and novelas. Nothing wrong with those things, but it means I was never exposed to many things that are referenced in movies, TV shows, etc. This includes musicians that most people consider common knowledge for everyone. It’s been an ongoing joke with my husband and friends, but I’m determined that Jake will know all these things that I didn’t know. And I’m starting him off by exposing him to all those artists that people can’t believe I never listened to (or can’t recognize…).
This is where we’ve traveled in our musical explorations so far:
The Doors
Jimi Hendrix
Bob Dylan
The Rolling Stones
The Who
Pink Floyd
What are your suggestions for our music instruction lessons?
I briefly mentioned Gaby Moreno on this blog almost two years ago (time flies!). I’m happy to say that she’s come a long way since then, including being nominated for a Latin Grammy this year, simply amazing!
One of the first signs that Gaby was going to be all right was when Ricardo Arjona picked her to sing a duet with him. You may not know this, but Ricardo Arjona is a pretty big deal. He’s probably the only Guatemalan musician (that I know of) that has made it big in the Latin music industry. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have a small crush on him…but back to the topic at hand.
Here’s their duet, which I loooooove.
And last week, Gaby (because we’re on a first name basis now) got to sing alongside Andrea Bocelli, who had a concert in Guatemala. How cool is that for a new emerging artist?!
I came across Carla Morrison while searching similar artists to Gaby Moreno on spotify, but a friend posted this music video today and I just had to share. Adorbs!
Came across this artist through a Gaby Moreno pandora station. I’m having a mellow morning so I thought I’d share in case anyone else was looking for something similar ;)
I heard this song on NPR’s Alt Latino, and thought it was a great sound for both Finca’s Music Corner and Discussions on Development. The lyrics focus on the violence of drug cartels in Mexico, with a powerful lyric claiming that the government of Mexico is making money off of the drug cartels. I thought these lyrics were worth with typing out and translating. Enjoy.
Cuanto tiempo va pasar How much time will pass
Para que pueda mejorar So that things will get better
Todos somos víctimas We are all victims
De un estado conquistado Of a conquered state
Por un gobierno involucrado By a government involved
en las ganancias de el narco In the profits of narcotraffic
Y se siembre con tus manos la hierba And be planted with your hands the herbs
Al sonoro rugir del canon At the resounding roar of the cannon
Y se siembre con tus manos la hierba And be planted with your hands the herbs
Al sonoro rugir del canon At the resounding roar of the cannon

The new album is out today. I should give a huge thanks to wikipedia which is chock full of helpful information on a plethora of lyrics from this song.
Some of you know of my odd obsession with small town USA. Especially Robert* since I keep threatening to visit him in Tennessee as soon as he moves back with his fiance (will you leave already so Jeff and I have an excuse to go to Tennessee???).
I can’t tell you where this obsession came from or why it has persisted so long, but I can tell you that this song gets me giddy every time I hear it. I would confess that it even gives me goose bumps some times, but that may be unforgivable.
“Miles and miles of back roads and highways,
Connecting little towns with funny names,
Who’d want to live down there in the middle of nowhere,
They’ve never drove through Indiana,
Met the man who plowed that earth,
Planted that seed, busted his ass for you and me,
Or caught a harvest moon in Kansas,
They’d understand why God made those fly over states…
On the plains of Oklahoma
With a windshield sunset in your eyes
Like a watercolor painted sky
Take a ride across the badlands
Feel that freedom on your face
Breathe in all that open space
Meet a girl from Amarillo
You might even wanna plant your stakes
In those fly over states…”
I want to see the harvest moon in Kansas, and feel that freedom on my face…and breath in all that open space! But until then, the song will have to do…
*I don’t think I’m allowed to mention Robert in a blog without directing you to his twitter account. Follow him.
Both of the following songs were on a recent episode of Suites. I wouldn’t particularly recommend the show, unless you’re just looking for something to waste your time with. But I really enjoyed the musical selections for their season premier.
Gotye: Smoke and Mirros
We Are Augustines: Chapel Song
Warning: a lot of kissing, and a long middle finger goodbye at the end.
