Musical Instruction

Those that know me well know that my pop culture knowledge is poor.  I blame this on living in Guatemala for some formative years, and growing up with a mom that listened mostly to music in Spanish, and watched Spanish news and novelas.  Nothing wrong with those things, but it means I was never exposed to many things that are referenced in movies, TV shows, etc.  This includes musicians that most people consider common knowledge for everyone.  It’s been an ongoing joke with my husband and friends, but I’m determined that Jake will know all these things that I didn’t know.  And I’m starting him off by exposing him to all those artists that people can’t believe I never listened to (or can’t recognize…).

This is where we’ve traveled in our musical explorations so far:

The Doors

Jimi Hendrix

Bob Dylan

The Rolling Stones

The Who

Pink Floyd

What are your suggestions for our music instruction lessons?

Back in March I wrote about a historical trial taking place in Guatemala.  Since then, it’s been quite a roller coaster of events.  The trial was interrupted multiple times by some fairly dramatic antics from the defense, but the trial eventually moved forward and the judge found Efrain Rios Montt guilty.  You’d think that would be the end of it (perhaps maybe an appeal), but far from it.  The Constitutional Court of Guatemala ordered a re-trial, and it escapes me now but I believe it was on the grounds of the in/admissibility of certain evidence by the defense.

Since then, the case has been in limbo pending the re-trial.  Until this week, when the Constitutional Court ruled on another motion that was filed by the defense.  The Constitutional Court has now ruled that Rios Montt may seek amnesty for the charges based on his position as general at the time of the crimes.  UGH.

As much as this is disappointing, it’s not surprising, and maybe that’s what’s even more disappointing.

There’s a more in depth analysis here.

Music Corner: Gaby Moreno

I briefly mentioned Gaby Moreno on this blog almost two years ago (time flies!).  I’m happy to say that she’s come a long way since then, including being nominated for a Latin Grammy this year, simply amazing!

One of the first signs that Gaby was going to be all right was when Ricardo Arjona picked her to sing a duet with him.  You may not know this, but Ricardo Arjona is a pretty big deal.  He’s probably the only Guatemalan musician (that I know of) that has made it big in the Latin music industry.  I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have a small crush on him…but back to the topic at hand.

Here’s their duet, which I loooooove.

And last week, Gaby (because we’re on a first name basis now) got to sing alongside Andrea Bocelli, who had a concert in Guatemala.  How cool is that for a new emerging artist?!

The Catrinka Project started as a 10-month project, but quickly turned into something more permanent due to the positive feedback they received.

What they do: design and produce handbags in different countries.  Why are they in the Charity of the Month section of this blog?  The money you spend to purchase one of their handbags helps educate girls around the world, while also employing women who need the income:

Our country bags are all made by socially responsible artisan groups that are woman-owned, woman-managed, or that predominantly employ women.

Starting May 1st, we commit that at least 10% of the retail price of each bag will be donated to educate girls in the countries where we work. We are also working hard on innovative programs to make sure that we get the most impact for our investment

I think this is one of my favorites:

Motherhood: the six o’clock “unhappy hour”

So this has been new in the last couple of weeks.  Granted, Jake’s been alive for less than two months, so I know I shouldn’t have gotten comfortable with any kind of schedule or general temperance that he had in his first few weeks of life.  But those first few weeks he was SO SO SO good, only fussing when he needed a diaper changed, was hungry, or needed to get some farts out (let me tell you, this kid can fart like no other).

I should preface all of this by saying that he is still an incredibly well behaved baby.  He’s not colicky, which I’m extremely grateful for.  He just has gotten into this new thing where on some days, right around six o’clock in the evening, he gets really fussy for a good hour or so.  The first time it happened it was really difficult for Jeff and I to figure out how to calm him down.  After a good 30-45 minutes of crying, we finally put him in his car seat and decided to take him for a drive (he loves his car seat and usually falls asleep whenever we take him out anywhere).  We hadn’t even hit the house door and he had already calmed down, but we drove around for a good 15 minutes or so until he fell asleep.

The very next day, he started getting fussy again, and this time we only waited about 5 minutes before we decided to put him in his stroller and take him for a walk.  He loved it.  He passed out, I went back home to have dinner (of course, his fussy hour is always when dinner for momma is ready!), and managed to get a few bites in before he woke up and got fussy again.  We decided to try a bath, and although he cried through the whole bath, he was calm and relaxed after and fell asleep.

This week his outbursts haven’t been as bad as last week, but it’s still hard when Jeff and I come home from work and want to spend time with him, and he just starts crying…he calms down if you soothe him, but it’s not a super easy task.

Today was amazing, however.  He got plenty of sleep during the day, so I think that helped.  We went for a little walk before dinner, he slept in his stroller for most of dinner, and then we gave him a bath after.  Bath time wasn’t super fun, but once we got him out of the water we got some great quality hang out time with him.  Those are the moments that we live for these days :)

All in all, it still feels stupid to complain about his fussy hour because I know some/most babies are a lot more difficult for a much longer time–I know we’ve got it easy.  But it’s still hard to see your little one crying and not be able to do anything about it.  On the bright side: he’s almost two months, and this phase should be over soon-ish (hopefully!).

Feel free to share your pearls of wisdom if you had a similar situation :)

Motherhood: Work outs and Spit up

I’ve never been one to exercise.  I know I’m lucky in that I’ve been able to maintain an acceptable figure with no effort.  I say acceptable because I’m not fat or heavy by any means, but I’m also not fit–there’s no tone anywhere in my body, haha.  I remember being in high school and every Summer I would tell myself: this is the Summer that I get in shape and come back to school with a super flat stomach.  Yeah, that NEVER happened, haha.

After high school, I’ve had a few attempts to start exercising regularly, but none lasted more than a couple weeks.  Now post pregnancy, I really feel the need to make this happen.  I gained a little over thirty pounds with the pregnancy, all healthy and no issues with my weight gain, so no worries there.  Now, seven weeks post delivery, I’ve lost all but twelve pounds–twelve very stubborn pounds.  The rest of the weight shed effortlessly, but these last twelve pounds seem like they’re gonna make me work for it.

I probably wouldn’t feel so pressured to lose the weight if I could fit into my old jeans.  Winter Is Coming, and I won’t be able to keep getting away with the same four skirts that I’ve been wearing for the last nine months (which I’m also sick of wearing).  Right now, my jeans make it past my knees and then get stuck riiiiiiiight around the thighs–I think these hips widened quite a bit!

Assuming my hips will slender down at least a bit so I can fit into my old clothes, I thought I would try my best to help things along.  So this week I decided to up my weekly exercise of just walking around the block.  I found a few steep hills that provide a heftier workout while pushing the stroller, and this morning I threw in a floor mat and a couple weights, and pulled over at the park towards the end of my walk.  I did a few stretches, some crunches, and a little weight lifting.

See the size of those weights? You can tell I mean business! ;) (baby steps…)

My view.

My view.

By that point, Jake was ready to eat, so I decided to nurse him at the park.  There was no one around and it’s on a raised level, so there weren’t strangers walking by and getting freaked out, which I was happy about.  Nursing in public isn’t my favorite, but I couldn’t resist hanging out in the cool morning air, listening to the birds and mellow music on Pandora.

It was actually quite nice, until I went to burp Jake and he threw up all over himself, my pants, and the mat.  Thankfully, I had just moved my phone out of the potential vomit trajectory, so at least that was good :)  After that, I decided to cut the rest of our walk short and just head home to clean both of us up…BUT, I was pretty proud with what I did accomplish and I’m more committed than I have ever been to actually getting into a regular exercise routine.

I’ll let you know if I make it past this week…

Motherhood: An Introduction

Well, as much as I don’t want this to become a mommy blog, it’s still going to be quite a huge part of my life from here on out, and I already have several things I want to blog in relation to my new title, so I figure I’ll go ahead and add a little “Motherhood Corner” to the blog :)

Our bundle of joy was born on August 14, 2013, the same day as my grandmother’s birthday–I can tell you she was VERY excited about this!

Since then, things have been pretty great.  And no, I’m not lying ;) Sure, I have to wake up a few times a night to nurse and change diapers, but we knew that was part of the deal when we decided to have him.  And as I type this I smell like gross milk because I have spit up on my pants (I’m getting around to changing…I swear), but the reality is that we have an awesome baby who is as easy as they come, and he makes all of these little things worth it.

It also helps that Jeff and I have a HUGE support system.  We live with his parents, so we have a built in support system to begin with, and we don’t have to worry about cooking and cleaning (which as any new mom will tell you, is HUGE), so all we have to focus on is..JAKE!  My mom and grandma were also a huge help the first few weeks, and now that I started work part-time, both grandma’s have arranged their schedule to help watch him.  It’s made going back to work doable at such a young age for him (he’s seven weeks today!): knowing he’s with people that we trust and that love him almost as much as we do is enormous, and we are so lucky to have both of them around.

So.  Jake’s happy, mommy and daddy are happy, and I’m happy to start sharing some of my adventures into motherhood through this blog, that since it’s inception has shifted and adapted to every major stage/event of my life thus far!

DIY: Baby Shower Banners and Succulents

I know I’m probably close to baby showering you out, but for the sake of posterity, I have to share a few things that we worked on for Jake’s baby shower :)

The easiest was a little circular banner with Jake’s name on it.  It was originally intended for our pregnancy photo shoot, but it was a little windy that day so they were flapping all over the place and didn’t quite work out the way I had envisioned.  It still came in handy by being a decor piece for the baby shower:

I worked on the simple parts of tracing and cutting out the circles, and Jeff did the more artistic part of filling out the letters, then I strung them together.  Pretty nice and simple, but I think it added a nice touch (can you tell we’re a little obsessed with his name?).

Next up: little triangle banners I’ve been wanting to make for a special occasion for a while.  I never thought to use fabric instead of paper, but I saw this done at another friend’s baby shower and thought I would give it a shot.

This project was a little lot more time consuming.  I had to measure out each triangle, cut it out, then put together after I had a good bunch cut out.  The individual triangles were 4.75 inches wide at the top, and 6 inches long, with about a half an inch at the top to fold over the twine.  I used a hot glue gun to attach to the twine, but did suffer a couple serious burns while folding the flap over the glue…so you know…be cautious!  I left about an inch and a half in between each triangle.

I decided to make several (4) small banners instead of one big, long one, and that worked out perfectly.  We ended up putting one at the entrance of the house in the front yard, one around the food table, one where the presents were, and one in the backyard (that last one is actually still hanging…oops).  I was quite happy with the finished product (although I am glad I did these almost two months ahead of time):

Finally, one of my favorites!  I wanted a guest gift that was semi-practical: something people might actually want to keep around for a little bit.  I remember one bridal shower I went to where the guest gifts were little Lady Palm plants–Jeff and I actually planted it and took care of it for a good 3, almost 4, years…and then we eventually killed it (it’s still a sensitive issue for both of us, we really loved our Lady Palm).  (Side note: I really hope we’re better with children than we are with plants.)  So I thought something along those lines…and figured succulents would be a good idea.  They’re kinda Western with the whole dessert plant thing, so it tied in with our cow boy theme, and they’re quite popular right now, so we figured people would like them.

First we collected a bunch of cans.  We tried to make them all different sizes and shapes, but as you can tell below, one size was pretty dominant, haha.  Jeff, with the help of his nephew, Brayden, poked holes on the bottom of the cans for drainage.

succulents 2 cansOur friend Sarah was kind enough to buy us all sorts of adorable succulents:

I tried to size some of them up with the appropriate size can so they would be fairly evenly matched, using the wider cans for wider succulents and such.

When I researched online how to plant these little suckers, it said you should mix soil with some kind of sediment/sand to improve drainage.  Jeff and I went to Home Depot to buy some and couldn’t find anything that was the right texture.  But we did find this:

Succulents soil

EVEN BETTER!  It was pretty affordable, so we went with it.

At this point I realized that I wanted to use some rocks to cover the soil, mostly for aesthetic reasons, but then when I watered them I realized it would be a good idea to put them on there as soil cover as well.

In the end, I think this was one of the best ideas for this little project, because it made them about 95% more cool (yep, that’s a real statistic…I ran studies on it…).

For the final touch, Jeff designed a little logo with Jake’s initials (again, obsessed!), and the date of our shower.   I guess this could be confused by people thinking it’s his birthdate, but being as that’s still unknown, I thought this would work.  After that, we punched a couples holes on each side of the logo, ran some twine around, and voila!

succulents final

I love them!  We used them to decorate different areas of the house, mostly in the backyard, by grouping them in pairs or threes.  As people left we reminded them to take one home, and I think most people were pretty happy with their little succulent plant :)

Ok, I think that’s all I got for baby shower craftiness madness.  Thanks for listening reading!

The Belly Makes Everyone a Friend

Tags

, , , ,

Pregnancy has definitely been a roller coaster of adventures.  For one, the belly gives all sorts of random perks: people holding the door open for you, letting you cross the street without trying to run you over, etc.  Those have been fun.

Towards the beginning of the pregnancy there was something else that at first kind of annoyed me, but now I actually really enjoy and is something I’m truly going to miss: the instant conversation starter!

Never before have I had so many random people start conversations with me, whether at Staples waiting to print pictures, checking out at the grocery store, buying something at the mall, or depositing a check at the bank.  At first I was a little annoyed at having to answer the standard questions over and over again (“how far along?” “do you know what it is yet?” “is it a boy or a girl?” “is this your first?” “are you excited?”), but I realized that 1) it’s kind of shitty to be annoyed over something like that, and 2) people were genuinely interested, which started making me genuinely happy after the first few months.

After I got over this minor annoyance, I started paying attention to how frequently this happened.  I’m sure the growing belly helped as well, since people were beyond the “is she pregnant or just has a beer gut” kind of thing (we’ve all been there…).  After the initial questions, some people would start to share about their children, how many they have, how old they are, how quickly they grow up, etc.  I’ve really enjoyed this!  I love that complete strangers are willing to open up and have a personal conversation with me.  All that was needed was a visual sign that we have something in common, or will have.

It makes me a little sad to think about how many connections and conversations are never had because there is no visual sign of that interconnectedness that we probably have with so many people.  I probably have walked by people who have traveled to Guatemala, have a passion for non-profits or traveling, have been to Machu Picchu, have read my favorite book, worked at Starbucks and have a crazy story or two about a regular customer, etc.  Think of all the interesting conversations you could have if you knew the person standing in line next to you at the grocery store was also interested in the differences between The Walking Dead show and the comic!  In our society we are so focused on the comings and goings of our own lives, rushing from one place to the next, or checking our phones for the latest updates from our friends on Facebook, that I wonder if this even crosses our minds.  Or we’re too shy to reach out and start a random conversation with a stranger.  It blows my mind.

I know this is probably a very obvious conclusion, but I honestly hadn’t thought about it until now, until I have this perfect sign and conversation starter, until I realized what I was missing out on.

On the plus side, I still have another couple weeks to chat up complete strangers.  Who knows, maybe babies are just as awesome of a conversation starter as a big belly!
